Normal delivery time for your DVD’s 4-5 weeks of your wedding date or sooner. To ensure every image I provide you is perfect, my post-production (photoshop) generally requires about 20-30 hours of work. Albums can take an additional 10-20 hours, plus consultation time.

What locations do you serve around Vancouver, BC?

I serve all the smaller cities around Vancouver including Squamish, Whistler, Surrey, White Rock, Burnaby and Richmond.

Are you digital, or do you use film?

I shoot with the latest state-of-the-art digital cameras and flash units. I retouch all images to provide you with breathtaking memories.

Do you supply digital negatives?

I supply full size digital negatives for all the images in colour and B&W. This gives my clients the freedom to share and print their images according to their needs.

Is it possible to have black-and-white wedding photos?

I provide you with all your images in both colour and black-and-white photography at no additional charge.

How many prints will I receive with my wedding photography package? Do you put logos on the prints?

I provide beautiful 4×6 unmarked prints with no logos. The number of proofs/prints will depend on the coverage you request, but I always provide you with the best pictures of the day so you have an idea of how your wedding photos will print.

Who pays for shipping, and how is my package shipped?

I charge a small fee for shipping packages to couples outside British Columbia. All packages are sent via Canada Post.

When will I receive my wedding photography proofs and digital images?

All wedding photography proofs are sent to the bride and groom’s / wedding couple’s address within five weeks of the wedding date. They often are sent before five weeks.

What do you do if it rains on our wedding day?

Rain showers are a reality in every part of the world. I am prepared to shoot indoors if need be. Alternatively we can create some fun shots with umbrellas or parasols if you choose to bring them. With great location photography options in and around Vancouver Island, mainland British Columbia, and Cuba, it is easy to sneak inside to skip a rain shower.

How much time should I plan to spend on wedding photography when I am planning my wedding in Victoria?

• Bridal Party Preparations

You will need 30 minutes to 1.5 hours. I recommend having your hair and makeup done at least 1.5 hours before your ceremony. I can then spend some quality time photographing you putting on your dress and veil, sharing a nice champagne toast with your bridesmaids and parents and having some intimate portraits with the girls before the big event occurs.

• Ceremony

The ceremony runs about 30-45 minutes with family photos directly afterward. Family portraits can take between 20 and 60 minutes. It takes between 2 to 5 minutes per grouping. I recommend bringing your family to no more than one location because I find family members can get bored and distracted if they’re kept too long. I give the same advice for wedding party portraits: It can take between 30 and 60 minutes depending on the size of the party and I recommend taking the wedding party to no more than one location. They can get bored and restless waiting for us to do the fun and creative portraits of the two of you.

• Creative & Fun Portraits

I recommend planning at least one special location away from other guests and distractions for 1.5 to 3 hours during your wedding day. This allows me enough time to give you a variety of fun and creative images that will tell a beautiful story of the love and enjoyment of life you share.

• Reception

I am usually asked to stay until the first dance; however, some of my packages include enough hours to allow me to photography the bouquet and garter toss and some of the dancing afterwards.

Should I make a list of my desired wedding photography photos?

I request a list of family combinations and specific bride and groom shots to ensure I get all the shots you want. In the past, some clients have cut out photos from magazines to show me the wedding photography that they like the best. I also am happy to receive links by email. This is a great way to share your vision of the style of photographs that inspire you.

Why should you have a destination wedding?

When the weather gets chilly, there;s nothing most people love more than getting away from it all. Whether youre going somewhere warm, relocating near family, or taking a trip abroad, a destination wedding reception, and honeymoon all rolled into one makes for a great celebration for you and your guests.
Having your wedding ceremony and reception in a new location provides a vacation for both you and your guests. Incorporating a vacation along with your wedding makes it a special week-long holiday instead a quick one or two day deal. Even better, your honeymoon starts right away as you are already there.

When you get away (meaning, far away), there is a different aura, a different atmosphere. Everywhere you are, romance is in the air. Sunsets, beaches, the waves, the colours, and the people.
There is loads to do planning and worrying about a wedding. Guest lists, details, flowers, locations, places for your guests to stay; and so on, and so forth. With a destination wedding, the pressure is minimized. Usually everything (or most things) are done in a package, and the guest list is far more minimal.

If youre not from British Columbia, consider trekking to the West Coast to have a wedding in Victoria or Vancouver Island.

Destination weddings, meaning weddings held in a vacation location away from the couple’s home town, have gained in popularity in recent years. Today, this hip alternative allows a couple to combine the best of an adventurous honeymoon with a more traditional ceremony, and sometimes save money in the process.

Some destination weddings just involve the eloping couple, others include a few close friends and family, and still others are full blowout affairs with multiple parties over a long wedding weekend.

So is a destination wedding right for you? Here are the pros and cons:

Pro: You’ll Save Money By Not Having 200 People at a Reception                                                                                                    
Spending a luxurious wedding weekend in a dramatic location can often cost less than a seated dinner at a nice location. Destination Wedding Etiquette calls for the bride and groom to pay for the hotel rooms, food and most of the guests’ expenses. Guests pay for their own airfare. If money is an issue, look to domestic locations or countries with a favorable exchange rate, and consider keeping the guest list small.

Con: Some of your loved ones may not be able to afford to travel that far

Again, talk to those who are truly essential before you’ve made the final decision on your destination wedding location. Consider paying for some of your guests’ airfare, and look into group discounts through travel agents.

Resorts and tourism organizations have seen the dollar signs behind this trend and so work hard to keep a destination wedding stress-free and simpler. As part of a package deal, many offer the complimentary services of their on-site wedding consultant who will help you coordinate all of the ceremony essentials (marriage license, cake, officiant, etc.) All you have to do is show up! Also talk to your wedding coordinator about organizing activities for your guests such as sightseeing, SCUBA or snorkeling excursions, sports, or shopping. If your resort has a spa onsite, give your guests gift certificates for spa services to help them really enjoy their stays.

Con: Planning a Wedding Long

Distance and Legal Red Tape
For those of you not getting married at a resort, you’ll have to juggle all those details yourself long distance. If your destination wedding is in a foreign country or even another state, you might run into complications when trying to get a marriage license. Consider hiring a coordinator who specializes in destination weddings to help you over these speed bumps. You’ll want to know how to get a marriage license in that location. You can also consult the marriage site at about.com for laws in popular destinations. And, check with those tourist boards, who may have literature available to help you find local florists, photographers, and venues.

Pro: Avoiding Stressful Family Situations

With a smaller invitation list, you can avoid feeling “forced” to invite the cousin you can’t stand, or the in-law that everyone fights with. Just invite your very closest friends and family to the intimate ceremony and celebration, or keep it romantic and don’t invite anyone. You can always send them pictures!

Con: Family Members and Friends You Love May Not Be There
Particularly for far-away locations, some guests may not be able to attend due to the expense, or the difficulty of getting time off of work. Older guests may not be able to travel so far away from home. Talk to those who are truly essential before you book tickets and send invitations. On the plus side, you’ll have far more time to spend with the guests who come to a destination wedding than those who come to a more traditional wedding.

Pro: By Combining Wedding and Honeymoon, You Can Afford to Go to that Dream Honeymoon Locale
Instead of spending your honeymoon at a Bread and Breakfast close to home, you can have the trip of a lifetime in an glamorous location. Best of all, you’ll have an excuse to return there for a 5-, 10-, or 25-year anniversary.

Con: With Your Family Around, and a Wedding to Worry About, Will You Really Get a Honeymoon?
Of course, you’ll be in a beautiful place, but will you have enough romantic alone time? To get around this, make sure you schedule it and insist on it. Arrive a few days before everyone else (you may need to do this anyway for marriage license requirements), or have a honeymoon nearby afterwards. If neither of these are possible, find interesting things your wedding party can do while you and your fiancé have couple time.

I’ve spent the past few weeks interviewing photographers that have taken photos at Merridale to provide our soon to be wed couples with some advice on how to plan their wedding shoots. Finding a photographer and planning your photo shoot can be hard work, but it can be easier if you know a little about the art behind taking the photographs. So here are some tips from Devin that will help you take those perfect photos.

Props for wedding and engagement photos have been increasing in popularity, so I asked Devin what his favourite props have been so far?
Props are an excellent way to add a personalized creative flair to the photographs. It is the perfect way to allow your photos to reflect your personality. People have brought in everything from coloured umbrellas to bubbles to sporting equipment. His recent photo shoot at Merridale of Deirdre and Dan’s wedding showcased laidback groomsmen throwing around a football in the orchard.

How would you suggest incorporating the farm scenery at Merridale into your photos?
There is no general way to incorporate the farm scenery, but rather a conversation with the bride and groom will help sort out what look is wanted. There are so many ways to create a photo, but it is important that you center the photo around the couples vision. In Dan and Dierdre’s photo shoot they incorporated many different scenes of the farm in their photos from tree covered “bambi’s grotto” to a little bit of rock climbing action on thestone wall by the pond.

When picking an outdoor venue for photographs what are some things people should keep in mind?
It is important to know what your location will look like in the season that your wedding will take place. You don’t want to plan your ceremony and photoshoot in the fall rain if you are having a summer wedding. Ideally you want to be plan for all types of weather, in case the weather should change. We all hope for the weather to stay sunny for the big day, but that doesn’t always happen. Having tents orcovered porches is a must for an Island wedding.

What is the best time of day in terms of lighting to take photographs?
The “golden hour” before sunset is the best time to take photographs, but that isn’t always possible with a wedding day schedule. A wedding is a full day affair and it isn’t possible to fit all of your pictures into one hour, but professionals know how to use any light to create amazing photos to commemorate your big day!

The Victorian-era Parliament Building in the Inner Harbour boasts elaborate stonework in its gorgeous structure and at night, marvel at its 3333 illuminating lights.

The Inner Harbour also includes the Legislative Buildings, Royal BC Museum, and Thunderbird Park, the home of 15 totem poles. It’s also the best spot for your spot of tea, at the Fairmont Empress Hotel. If culture is more your more your cup of tea, visit North America’s second oldest Chinatown.

Gardens are in abundance in Victoria, and Butchart Gardens is the best of them all. Over one hundred years old, this garden contains such a wide variety of colourful plants and natural life that it’s clear why over one million visitors flock to it each year.

For those who love the outdoors, we recommend Galloping Goose Trail, the best place to explore whether you’re on foot or bike. Then while you’re out there, visit the Fisgard Lighthouse, a must-see landmark that is the first lighthouse on Canada’s west coast still in operation.  When you’re finished, go exploring on the ocean, taking a boat tour to indulge in whale watching within the Pacific, you might even see orcas, grey whales, and sea lions.
